Grade 2: My Needs in My Community

Stage 1 - Desired Results




Established Goals:
Specific Outcomes:
*We are blessed and sent back to doing good works while praising and blessing God.  (Religion)
*People in my community meet some of their needs through services/facilities
*Use a variety of forms or oral, print and other media texts to organize and give meaning to experiences, ideas and information.
*Record information and ideas in ways that make sense.

General Outcomes:
*To explore how we honour people (Religion)
*People in my community cooperate to meet the needs of its members. (Social Studies)
*Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to explore thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences. (LA)
*revise words and sentences to improve sequence or add missing information.  


Essential Questions:
How does the community work together to meet the basic needs of the people who live there?

Students will know:
*An understanding of what our basic needs are
*Knowledge and background of Morinville.
*How to access the application programs via the launcher.

Students will be able to:
*Log onto our system and access personal file.
*Use basic keyboarding skills successfully
*Successfully use the Kidspiration program

How would you introduce them to the community?

Stage 3 - Learning Plan






Teaching and Learning Activities
Grade 2 GPV " My community"
1.    Free exploration of the Kidspiration program.
Teacher shows the Undo, Change a bubble for a picture, move pictures around, go from diagram to outline view.
1- 1 hour lab period

2.    Brainstorm and web the basic needs  and services of the Morinville Community.

1- 30 minutes in class period

3. Children create in Kidspiration a web of the people in my community (firemen, police, etc) from the Kidspiration library. This is an extension of the skills developed during the previous lab period.

1-1hour lab period
 Teacher must organize picture taking by parent volunteers and then, have Tech Facilitator import the pictures to Kidspiration library. Teacher and/or Tech Facilitator must ensure the input and output devices are correctly set for recording in the student's sound control panel.

4.   Teacher explanation of the aims and goals of the project, including expectations for students.  
Teacher will share and discuss the rubric with the students.

1- 1/2  hour in class period

5.    Students will open a new Kidspiration document and choose the pictures from the Kidspiration custom library,  which match services where people get their basic needs met in Morinville.

1- 1hour lab period

6.    Using their background knowledge, students will type in the location names. He/she will then write brief statements (in the outline view) describing their pictures and how they meet people needs.


2-1 hour lab period  

7.     Students will orally read and record their written text. They will practice presenting orally.

1- 1 hour lab period

8.     Presentations will be filmed, by a parent volunteer, so it can be viewed at leisure, and at appropriate  times with parents.

2- 1 hour in class period

How will students know where they are going, why they are headed there, and how they will be evaluated?

Prior to onset of the project, teacher will clearly explain the goals and objectives,  explain why they are exploring basic needs, and clearly outlining the self and peer evaluation process. The teacher will share the rubric being used for assessment.

How will you hook the students at the beginning of the unit?

A child from Bosnia has moved into your community. How would you introduce them to the community? How would you help them to meet their basic needs in Morinville?

What will help students experience the big idea of this unit?  How will you equip them with the needed skills and knowledge?

At onset of project, teacher and students will explore the program using people in the community as a common experience. Students will see and experience the extensive possibilities of Kidspiration.

How will you get students to reflect and rethink?  How will you guide them in rehearsing, revising, and  refining their work?

After the self and peer evaluation process, students will be encouraged to take time to use  feedback to revise and refine their project. Students will be able to observe themselves on film and reflect on their work.

How will students exhibit and self-evaluate their growing skills, knowledge and understanding?

Students will present their projects to an audience including parents and peers. They will self assess their work.  Their teacher will assess their presentation as well as the project. using the rubric  Their peers will provide oral feedback.
