Stage 1 - Desired Results




Established Goals:
People in Canadian communities meet their needs in various ways.

Enduring Understandings:
Students will understand that the land and the location of a community can affect how people fulfill their needs.

Essential Questions:
How are Canadian communities alike? Different?
Why are Canadian communities alike in many ways?
Why are there some differences in the ways Canadian communities meet their needs?

Students will know and be able to:
We live in a small community which is part of Alberta, which is part of Canada.

Be aware that Canada has ten provinces and three territories.

Identify occupations and recreation that exist in each of the communities studied.

Understand how needs are met in different communities.

Analyze how physical environment affects the way people meet their needs.





Stage 2 - Assessment Evidence






Performance Task(s)
You are ambassadors for your province and your task is to promote your province through a slide show that you will present to your classmates. You will be evaluated using the rubric provided.

Poster to identify the unique aspects of the province they researched

Stage 3 - Learning Plan






Teaching and Learning Activities
Introduction of Unit:
A family tree homework assignment was the impetus to a discussion about where our families came from, where they settled in Canada initially, and finally arriving in St. Albert, Alberta.
As a class, students will explore the map of Canada as well as identify where Canada is in relation to the rest of the world.
We will identify provinces and their capital cities by constructing puzzles of Canada.
Students select partners and a province to study. They write their research questions.
Students read information on their province.
Lab period 1:
Using Kidspiration the children create a web to organize their research findings.

Lab period 2:
Introduction to Appleworks Presentation: Present “AdviceProvinces” slideshow and discuss a slideshow purpose, expectations as well introduce some visual literacy.
Refer to rubric.

Lab period 3:
Students log in.
Slide show exploration:
A. Open a presentation document in Appleworks
B. Create a background for your slideshow using your tools, try different things, this is practice.
C. When you are satisfied with your background, create a text box and select font and size for title slide. Complete title slide.
D. Name your slide. Save your work.
Continue researching in class.

Lab period 4:
Students log in.
A. Students get together in their groups, create another slide, create the background, a title text box and select font, etc.
They create another text box for the information and choose font, size, colors, etc. Complete first slide. Name your slide. Save your work.

Lab period 5:
Students log in.
A. Students get together in their groups, create another slide, create the background, a title text box and select font, etc.
They create another text box for the information and choose font, size, colors, etc. Complete second slide. Name your slide. Save your work.

Lab period 6:
Students log in.
A. Students get together in their groups, create another slide, create the background, a title text box and select font, etc.
They create another text box for the information and choose font, size, colors, etc. Complete third slide. Name your slide. Save your work.

Lab period 7, 8, 9:
Students log in.
A. Students get together in their groups, create other slides, create the background, a title text box and select font, etc.
They create another text box for the information and choose font, size, colors, etc. Complete all slides. Name them. Save your work.
Students add transitions and pictures.
They verify their work using the rubric.

Lab period 10:
Students practice their presentation and verify with the rubric. They present.
