Stage 1 - Desired Results
Topic A: My Community in the Past, Present and Future

• Students will demonstrate their understanding of Historical St. Albert by creating a slide show.
• Why do communities change?
• Should our community try to stay theway it is, or change?
Students will know:
• Review login process.
• Using their notes and background information learned on the field trips, students will know key facts about each historical site.
Students will be able to:
• Use Apple Works Presentation to create a slide show.
• How to access pictures from the shared folder.
• Choose a picture and copy it into their slide show.
• Write the text into the slide show.
• Create a title page for the slide show.
• Extension: Create an original picture of one aspect of their community in the future, using the Apple Works Draw Program.
Stage 2 - Assessment Evidence
Students will choose 5 historical sites from the list of eleven given choices. Students will then create a slide show consisting of a title page, and five pictures of historical sites. Students are asked to include 2 to 3 sentences relating to that site. Students who have completed the assignment early can then extend their project to include a picture relating to some component of the future.

Stage 3 - Learning Plan
Teaching and Learning Activities
Teachers take digital pictures of sites and download them to shared folder.
Students select 5 sites and write out 2 to 3 sentences for each site.
1- AppleWorks exploration (guided lesson):
Logon to Appleshare
Explore AppleWorks presentation:
-make 3 slides
-My Favorite Animals (Title) + name + clipping
-first animal + clipping
-second animal + clipping
-transition + play
Save + logoff
Logon. Launch Presentation.
-Make 6 slides
-Guide students to create a coloured background
-Title page: Historical St.Albert, student name, picture under File>Show clippings (Discuss appropriate search terms to find a graphic appropriate for presentation). Possibilities: ship, cabin, log, horse...
-Complete next 5 slides with picture, text and title.
Key Design Elements
How will students know where they are going, why they are headed there, and how they will be evaluated?
Facilitators and teachers will provide an overview of expectations and instructions. A rubric will be included as a guide.
How will you hook the students at the beginning of the unit?
Students will visit and take pictures of each historic site.
What will help students experience the big idea of this unit? How will you equip them with the needed skills and knowledge?
Exploring historical information through field trips, stories, pictures, interviews and discussions.
How will you get students to reflect and rethink? How will you guide them in rehearsing, revising, and refining their work?
Students will have to reflect on what they have learned in order to effectively produce text for each photo.
How will students exhibit and self-evaluate their growing skills, knowledge and understanding?
Students will gain independence and confidence in their ability to demonstrate their understanding.
